UEFA Euro 2012 Finals Qualifiers - 27-10-2011

Written by A.llen

With the last five places secured; Denmark, France, Greece, Russia and Sweden qualified to be in the UEFA Euro 2012 finals of football soccer. These five nations alongside with Ukraine, Poland, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, England and Germany are comfirmed for the finals draw on 2 December in Kyiv. Meanwhile, the next month the play-offs will involve Czech Republic, Turkey, Ireland, Estonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and the recently added Portugal.

We enjoyed two matches in a hard effort to claim the supremacy of the group; for a moment, Bosnia and Herzegovina seems to be leading the encounter and about to claim their first final against France, Samir Nasri's penalty at 12 minutes to ensure the result, give French the gap they needed to top the Group D. Now, also in Copenhagen, Denmark defeated Portugal, the victory of 2-1 against the Portuguese ensured their leadership over Group H. Now Portugal still has a chance, they are going to the play-offs against Norway, who beat Cyprus 3-1.

The encounters may vary the expectative of many, while everyone knew that Sweden couldn't take down Netherlands in Group E, so Sweden needed a win in home to qualify automatically as runners up with the best records against the sides 1-3-4-5 of their section. When everything seems doomed, Sweden managed to deal 2 goals in a minute for a 3-2 advantage that lead them to the finals; plus they were the only side to take points of Netherlands.

Russia and Greece required only a point to secure their places, and they did it! I have to point that the way these matches were developed, you can notice that their efforts were great indeed; these were moments of tension, so I dare to say their performance can be catalogued as heroic deeds. With 11 minutes left, Greece were doomed to the play-offs as they were 1-0 down against Georgia while Croatia were beating Latvia 2-0, but at the crucial moments, Giogos Fotakis and Angelos Charisteaas secured Greece at the top of Group F.

With the victory over Andorra of 6-0, Russia ensures their lead over Group B with Republic of Ireland following two points behind after their victory over Armenia 2-1. Also, even if they didn't play on Thursday, Estonia has a first play-off match as runners-up just behind Italy in Group C thanks to the lost of Serbia 1-0 against Slovenia.

Germany and Spain completed their runs with absolute perfection, denying their opponents any play-off chances. Germany reached 10 in Group A wins with a 3-1 victory over Belgium and leaving Turkey as second after the 1-0 over Azerbaijan. Spain took down Scotland with a victory of 3-1 for an 8 success; leaving Czech Republic to finish with a 4-1 over Lithuania.

Of all groups, only the Group G has everything ready before October 11th, England leads the group and leave Montenegro with a first play-off despite the loss against Switzerland of 2-0.
