2010 Pasadena BCS Championship Game

By H.H.A.

The BCS Championship game is an annual Bowl Game that changes location every year and is played to determine the winner of the Bowl Championship Series, henceforth it's name BCS, as well to get the champion of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Every year, the best 2 teams at the end of the season (taking the results form the standings in the BCS) compete in this game. This event takes place since 1998, when an agreement between the Big Ten conference and the Pac-10 conference lead to join the Bowl alliance with the organizers of the Rose Bowl game. Games from the Bowl coalition where taking place since 1992 but without the participation of the winners of those 2 conferences (Big Ten conference and the Pac-10 conference).

In the beginning, this event rotated between the participants of Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Rose bowl, and Fiesta Bowl, but now it's a separate event with the same location of the host bowl games in the week following New Year's Day, so the sponsor of the BCS game will be the same of the location bowl host of the respective year and will be included in the name (for example: Tostitos BCS National Championship Game - sponsor of the Fiesta Bow).

The winner of this game gets the AFCA National Championship Trophy and the National Football Foundation's MacArthur Trophy. Also the USA Today Coaches' Poll declares the winner the National Champion in their poll from the year.

One important fact about college football is that the ruling agent - the NCCA - doesn't grant any award or championship title to the best team. These titles are bestowed by 4 different agencies; three human polls and 1 ranking are taken into account: The AP Poll and the Coaches Poll. weekly polls that begin since the preseason, and 2 mid season polls: the Harris Interactive Poll and the BCS Standings. This last one adds crucial facts from the Harris and Coaches polls into it's results. As the season ends, the BCS standings determine the teams to play in the Bowl Games and in the BCS championship Game, the AP and Coaches polls’ final results declare a National Champion, and the BCS Rankings and Harris Poll determine the participants of the BCS National Championship Game.

In 2010 the Bowl Championship Series will take place in Pasadena, and will be named the Citi BCS National Championship Game. The game's date is January 7; the match up in this Bowl will be revealed on December 6, 2009, from the final standings. It is the third time this location hosts the BCS Game. The broadcast rights are now owned by ABC and ESPN (both companies from the Disney network).
